Non-official certificates

These non-official certificates are issued by water sports associations such as the VDWS, WSVO (formerly VÖYWS), and VÖWS (Austria) or SWAV (Switzerland), and are voluntary; however, there are certain areas where they are required (e.g., the VAW Basic Certificate).

For supervised inland and coastal waters; minimum age 7 years

For inland and coastal waters. This license is recognized by most waterway owners, with the exception of Berlin, where a state-issued license is required. It serves as proof of qualification when renting a board both in Germany and abroad. It is important that it is a VAW basic license (VAW = Vereinigte Ausbildungsverbände Windsurfen). The VAW consists of five training associations from Austria, Switzerland, and Germany that issue a joint basic license. Minimum age: 14 years.

Recreational Boat License Inland

Details

Inland Motorboat License (SBF-Binnen): Required for motorboats with an engine output of more than 3.68 kW (5 PS) and a length of less than 15 meters on inland waterways; in Berlin, it is required for all motorized vessels. For sailing, the SBF-Binnen license is required when sailing under sail in some inland waters in northern and central Germany. This license is also required for windsurfing on Berlin’s waters. The minimum age is 16 for motorboats and 14 for sailing and windsurfing.

Recreational Boating License for Coastal Waters

Details

Required by the Federal Ministry of Transport for sailing yachts and motorboats in German coastal waters (3 sm zone) within the scope of the Maritime Waterways Regulations—for all motorized boats with an engine power of 3.68 kW (5 PS) or more; minimum age 16 years.

Lake Constance skipper's license

Details

Applies to sailboats with a sail area of more than 12 square meters and to motorboats with more than 4.4 kW (6 PS) on Lake Constance; minimum age is 18. Category D is required for sailboats with a sail area of more than 12 square meters; minimum age is 14. The Lake Constance Boating License can be converted to an Inland Recreational Boating License upon request and without an exam. The Category A (Motor) practical exam may be recognized for the Recreational Boating License for Lakes. The Inland Recreational Boating License (Sailing) can be converted, upon request, into a temporary vacation license valid for up to four weeks.

Sport Coastal Skipper's License

Details

Applies to coastal waters within the 12-sm zone. Although it is an official certification, it is not mandatory. Many charter companies require it for insurance purposes. Minimum age: 16 years; requirements: SBF-See certification, proof of 300 nautical miles sailed after obtaining the SBF-See certification.

Yachtmaster Offshore

Details

Valid for coastal waters within a 30 sm range, the Baltic and North Seas, the English Channel, the Mediterranean, and the Atlantic. Prerequisites: a recreational boat operator’s license for the open sea and an additional 1,000 sm of experience at sea; for holders of a BR license, only 700 sailed nautical miles are required; minimum age 16 years. Although the Recreational Sea Vessel License is an official certification, it is not mandatory. It authorizes the holder to operate commercially used training yachts. The license also authorizes the holder to operate both commercially used training yachts and historic vessels. Minimum age: 16 years; proof of experience: 1,000 nautical miles following the SBF-See requirements.

German Certificate of Competence for Worldwide Navigation

Sporthochseeschifferschein (SHSS)

Valid worldwide. Requirements: Recreational Boat License and an additional 1,000 sm at sea; minimum age 18. The SHSS is required to operate commercially used training yachts.
